Putin and Medvedev: So happy together?

Though Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recently told the Financial Times that it would be "hard to imagine" running for reelection against his mentor, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, talk of rivalry remains on the lips of Kremlin watchers. The question of who will stand for president on the ticket of United Russia is as yet unsettled.

Medvedev was virtually assured election in 2008 when Putin, constitutionally limited from seeking a third consecutive term as president, chose the then-little-known politician from his entourage as his successor.

Until recently, the two have been virtually inseparable, rarely deflecting assertions that Medvedev is little more than Putin's puppet and place-holder.
